The summer heat began to manifest itself at sea and on land. Especially when we are on the sea, the temperatures combined with humidity can be more challenging. Then now you need to choose an air conditioning system for your boat. So, how to choose these systems and how to use them?
We have listened to all the details we need to know from Halil Ibrahim Bars, Project and Sales Engineer of Eltesan Mobile Technology Systems company. The company is the Turkish representative of the Dometic brand, which is designed to withstand the harsh sea conditions.
Be Protected from Uncomfortable Temperatures
“Whether you're on a cruise for a day or a year, your boat needs to have reliable air conditioning to keep you cool and comfortable. Ambient temperatures in the open sea can be stifling. Coupled with moisture, you may feel even more uncomfortable. This is where our high quality Dometic marin type air conditioners, which Eltesan mobil company is the exclusive distributor of in Turkey, come into play. Dometic, a world-leading brand, has a wide range of models that will make you comfortable on your boat.”
How Do Marin-Type Air Conditioners Work?
“The principle behind the concept of air conditioning is the movement of heat. An air conditioner draws heat from the air by transferring the heat in the cabin to the refrigerant gas in the air conditioner. The Marin type air conditioner then transfers the heat from the refrigerant gas to the seawater. The process is reversible, the air conditioner can draw heat from the seawater and transfer this heat to the cabin. In addition to lowering the temperature, moisture from the air is also removed. Humidified air allows people to feel more comfortable, the boat remains dry, and moisture-related inconveniences disappear.”
3 Basic Marine Type Air Conditioning
"The Dometic brand has three basic marine-type air conditioners: package air conditioning systems, split gas air conditioning systems and chiller systems.
Package Air Conditioning Systems
Due to their low cost and ease of installation, they are the best choice for boats up to 40 feet. A single unit can cool one or more areas with ducts and pipes to save space and cost. However, the unit is larger due to the fact that the air handling unit and the cooling unit are located on a “pedestal”. In addition, since the compressor is installed in the same unit, these systems are slightly noisier than Split-Gas or Chiller Systems.
Split Gas Air Conditioning Systems
It is usually seen on boats up to 80 feet. The condenser unit of the system is usually installed in an engine room, while the evaporator units are installed in areas where cooling is needed. The evaporator units are connected to the condenser unit by copper lines. The maximum distance of the line is 50 feet. The installation of this system is usually more costly. The advantage of the Split Gas system is that the units take up less space in living quarters and are quieter due to the fact that the compressor is installed in a place where it will be heard less.
Chiller Systems
The Chiller unit located in the engine room cools or heats the fresh water pumped from an insulated piping line to the air handlers located in the living area. Thus, air handlers cool or heat the air. it is ideal for boats longer than 24 m. There are no restrictions on the number of air handlers. There is also no Dec restriction for the connection between the chiller and the airhandlers.”
Pay Attention to Them When Choosing an Air Conditioner
“There are several important factors that you should consider when choosing a marine-type air conditioner: the capacity of the air conditioner, its energy consumption and noise level, as well as its characteristics.
Not every air conditioner is compatible with boats of all sizes and types. These characteristics will help you make the right decision when buying an air conditioner.
Different air conditioners have different cooling capacities. You need to match the capacity of the air conditioner with the size of the interior that you want to cool. Dometic air conditioners provide cooling power from 4 thousand to 72 thousand BTU per hour and provide 27 percent more energy efficiency than similar-sized models of other brands. It uses state-of-the-art engineering in air conditioners. From the environmentally friendly refrigerant R-410A to innovative solutions that reduce vibration in living quarters, you can count on Dometic to ensure a comfortable indoor climate, work efficiently and take up minimal space.”
